REDHOUSE – A Cattaraugus County man faces 2nd-degree manslaughter and 1st-degree assault charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Town of Redhouse Wednesday.
Cyrus N. Spruce, 19, was arrested Wednesday by Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputies. Spruce of Sawmill Run in Steamburg, N.Y., is accused of speeding and driving recklessly on a decommissioned section of Old State Route 17 in Redhouse, and striking two parked cars and a pedestrian standing alongside one of the vehicles.
Instead of stopping to assist the victims, officials said, Spruce fled the scene. Watson M. Cooper, 23, of Salamanca was identified as the pedestrian who was struck by Spruce’s vehicle. Watson was transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Spruce was arrested Wednesday evening and arraigned in Town of Salamanca Court. He was being held without bail. He is scheduled to reappear in Town of Redhouse Court at a later date.
