Defending champion Liz Johnson won her first match Tuesday morning in the USBC Queens Tournament at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. However, two losses later in the day ended the Cheektowaga bowler’s hopes of winning her third Queens title, one of women’s bowling’s major championships.
Johnson, who qualified eighth with 3,364 pins for 15 games (224.26 average), was sent to the sidelines by No. 11 seed Brittany Smith, a collegiate star from Des Moines, Iowa, 646-625. Liz opened match play with a 671-596 triumph over No. 57 Kamillah Dammers of Aruba. She was knocked into the elimination bracket by a 675-643 loss to Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio.
Top qualifier Birgit Poppler of Germany won all three of her Tuesday matches and is one of eight undefeated bowlers after the first day.
