Summer to churn up cascade of events in downtown Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS – The summer season kicks into high gear here this Memorial Day weekend.

“You can go do something every day and not fit in all of the activities that are spread across this county. You’ve got to soak it in,” said Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp. President John Percy. “There’s just an energy that is being felt here.”

A packed slate of summer offerings was unveiled Tuesday during a news conference on Old Falls Street. The events are a collaboration and cross-promotion among Niagara Falls State Park, Old Falls Street, Hard Rock Cafe, Seneca Niagara Casino and the NTCC.

Offerings range from free movies under the stars, fireworks, free concerts and street festivals, to a burlesque show and championship boxing.

A number of national acts have been booked for Seneca Niagara Casino, including Smokey Robinson, Jackson Browne, Counting Crows and Rob Thomas, The Hollywood Vampires featuring Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper, Culture Club with Boy George, Olivia Newton John, Coco Montoya and a ‘90s tribute featuring Salt ‘n Pepa, Vanilla Ice and Coolio.

There also will be free concerts in the Legends Live series, every Friday from June 24 to Sept. 2 on Old Falls Street, which connects the entrance of Niagara Falls State Park and the Niagara Falls Conference and Event Center.

The Hard Rock Cafe will celebrate its 20th anniversary July 16 with a birthday party featuring a free concert by the ‘90s rock band the Gin Blossoms.

The Memorial Day Block Party runs from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, on Old Falls Street, where the Taste of Niagara will be held on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3 and 4, and ninth annual Niagara Falls Blues Festival, Sept. 16-18.

New this year is the Boots, Brews and Bacon festival, a free event Aug. 5-7 in Seneca Square at Seneca Niagara Casino. The same site also will be the setting for the Niagara Falls Music and Arts Festival June 17-19.

Also new is the Downtown Niagara Falls Business Association’s free “power card,” for special offers on food, beverages, attractions and accommodations Visit
