Harry D. Schutte of Amherst, retired president of Schutte Buffalo Hammermill, died Monday in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 84.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Schutte was a third-generation owner of what started out about a century ago as Schutte Pulverizer, a family business that produced pulverizing equipment. In 2001, the company purchased the assets of Buffalo Hammermill and both companies were merged, becoming Schutte Buffalo Hammermill. Mr. Schutte was with the company from 1949 to 2004.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1951 to 1955.
He was a member and trustee of Amherst Community Church for many years. He also was a member of the Brookfield Country Club, Transit Valley Country Club and Palm Beach National Golf Club.
Mr. Schutte was an accomplished pianist and avid golfer who lived part of the year in West Palm Beach, Fla.
He is survived by two daughters, Deb Nelson and Barbara Brady; two sons, Bob and David; a sister, Audrey Lerigo; a brother, John; his longtime companion, Susie Hitchcock; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Amherst Community Church, 77 Washington Highway, Snyder.
