It has become traditional for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus to end the Pops seasons with a Memorial Day salute. Last year, Associate Conductor Stefan Sanders struck just the right note – just solemn enough, just humorous enough. Sanders also will preside over this year’s concert, called “Star-Spangled Pops.”
A peek at the program reveals more than a few gems. Our national hymn, “God of Our Fathers,” isn’t something you hear every day. Carmen Dragon’s Hollywood arrangement of “Over There” is sure to be stirring. The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus will pour its all into “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” which always brings down the house. And a highlight every year is the Armed Forces Salute, during which veterans from the various armed forces are invited to rise to accept applause and thanks.
The concerts are at 10:30 a.m. May 27 and 8 p.m. May 28. Tickets are $34.50-$86.50. The BPO is offering free tickets to veterans and active-duty personnel. In addition, their families, or anyone else who accompanies them to the concert, may receive a 20 percent discount.
