Mercy Flight’s new helicopter hangar and base in Springville was officially opened Monday afternoon during a ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony.
The 3,600-square-foot hangar and Mercy EMS base behind Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is expected to improve response times for critically ill or injured patients by allowing the nonprofit organization to position its aircraft and crews closer to rural communities.
The base will also serve as a permanent home for Mercy EMS’ Springville ground ambulance operation, which serves the Village of Springville and Town of Concord.
Springville was the site of Mercy Flight’s first landing, in September 1981. Springville is Mercy Flight’s fourth base. Others are in Cheektowaga, Batavia and Olean.
