HARTLAND – Two men trying to outrun police investigating thefts from Olcott-area vehicles crashed in a stolen vehicle about 5 a.m. Friday Hartland and Townline roads, Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies said.
Dakota J. Hewitt, 21, of Barker and Christopher D. Spence, 20, of Lockport were charged each with felony counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Spence also was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
After the crash, the two fled on foot but were tracked down by officers using a dog and assisted by a Department of Homeland Security helicopter, authorities said.
Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies said that when they showed up at the scene of the car break-ins, they spotted a 2013 Volkswagen that had been reported stolen earlier from the Lockport area. Deputies said they also recovered property stolen from Olcott-area car break-ins.
Hewitt faces additional charges including unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Barker and New York State police assisted in the investigation.
