WATERPORT – The fundamentals and safety of sailing will be the focus of Oak Orchard Yacht Club’s summer instructional youth sailing program at the yacht club, on Archbald Road at Oak Orchard Creek and Lake Ontario.
Two sessions are planned for this year – July 11-22 and July 25-Aug. 5. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“It’s all about safety, learning the terminology, boat handling, seamanship and rules – with an emphasis on making it fun for the kids,” said John Brown of Batavia, program coordinator. “Classes are for all skill levels, novice to racer.”
Participants must be at least 9 and be able to swim 100 yards while wearing a Coast Guard=approved life vest. Students will be grouped according to ability for both classroom and on-the-water instruction.
The last Friday of each session is designated as a family day.
