PELHAM, Ont. – A young boy run over by a riding lawnmower Thursday night is in critical condition, according to Niagara Regional Police.
Authorities say the boy, soon to be 3 years old, was following behind as his 32-year-old father, who was cutting the grass at about 9:15 p.m.
The boy, who previously had gone into the house but had come back outside unbeknownst to his father, was struck and knocked to the ground as the father put the mower into reverse. The boy was then run over by the mower, police said.
An off-duty paramedic supervisor who lived nearby helped stabilize the boy, along with firefighters. He was transported to St. Catharines General Hospital, according to CKTB-AM, and then flown to an out-of-region hospital.
Authorities are not releasing the names of those involved at the request of the family.
Pelham is just west of Welland, about 30 miles from the Peace Bridge.
