Jim Baron to retire after four years at Canisius

Canisius College basketball coach Jim Baron has decided to retire.

The announcement, which will come at a news conference at 1:30 Friday afternoon at Canisius, represents a change of heart by the 61-year-old coach.

Baron agreed to a contract extension with Canisius in early March that ran another three years, through the 2019-20 season.

However, he has decided he wants to spend more time with his family, a Canisius source reports. The news was first reported by Channel 7.

In 29 seasons as a Division I head coach, Baron has a record of 461-429. His Canisius record over four seasons was 73-61. In the five seasons before Baron arrived, Canisius went 52-102.

The Griffs finished last season 14-19 and lost in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament to Iona.

Canisius has work to do this offseason. The coaching change comes later than usual in the college basketball offseason. Canisius still has three open scholarships to give for next season. Ten players are under scholarship, including two incoming freshman recruits.
