Candidates for Canisius job plentiful

A look at potential replacements with Jim Baron stepping down as Canisius basketball coach:

Pat Clarke, Canisius assistant (and interim replacement): The ’92 Bona grad has been with Baron at Bona, Rhode Island and with the Griffs. Oversees scheduling, recruiting and scouting. Never has been a college head coach.

Reggie Witherspoon, Tennessee-Chattanooga assistant: Buffalo native has been an assistant at Alabama and UT-Chat since his 14 years at UB, where he did a highly credible job. Tight with Canisius AD Bill Maher.

Turner Battle, assistant coach at UAB: It’s just a matter of time until this former UB great breaks through to the head coaching ranks. Great mind for game. Former assistant at UB and Chattanooga. Wife Clare is from WNY.

Dave Niland, head coach Penn State-Behrend: Owns a 431-179 record at the Division III school, with 21 straight winning seasons. Has a Canisius pedigree. Has been considered for Griffs’ job before.

Kevin Kuwik, Dayton assistant: The Lackawanna native and St. Francis product has spent five years as an aide to one of the nation’s top young coaches. He earned a Bronze Star in Iraq before starting his coaching career.

Adam Cohen, Stanford assistant: This Williamsville native and former Williamsville North player has been on the rapid rise. Has had stops at Southern Cal, Rice, Harvard and Vanderbilt before joining Stanford in April. His day will come. Is it at hand?

Patrick Beilein, head coach at LeMoyne: Son of former Canisius and current Michigan coach John Beilein. Has been head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan, too. A better bet to be the next Griff head coach after whoever gets hired this time.
