Man crashes car into pole in Tonawanda, tries to hide in tree

A Buffalo man crashed a stolen car in the City of Tonawanda on Wednesday morning and then tried to hide from police in a tree.

A pizza deliveryman reported his car was stolen at 10:30 p.m. at Delaware and Hodge avenues in Buffalo, City of Tonawanda Police said.

A few hours later, Zayvaughn R. Boutwell, 22, crashed that vehicle into a pole at the corner of Niagara and Franklin streets, police said. Boutwell had been driving erratically and police were attempting to catch up to it when the crash occurred.

After the crash, Boutwell, of Riverside Avenue, kicked out a side window and ran through several yards. He was found hiding in a tree in a backyard on Adam Street just before 2 a.m., police said.

Police charged Boutwell with driving a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, resisting arrest, criminal trespass, false personation and five traffic charges.

Boutwell had given officers a fake name and date of birth. He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Tonawanda City Court.
