Buffalo man headed to prison for abusing, dousing wife with gasoline

A husband who doused his wife with gasoline and threatened to set her afire will spend time in prison for his crime.

Leslie May, 58, of Buffalo was given an indeterminate sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years by State Supreme Court Justice Deborah Haendiges for his conviction on one count of first degree reckless endangerment.

According to prosecutors, May attacked his wife on Jan. 26, striking her in the head with a gas can and pouring the gasoline on her. A neighbor upstairs smelled the gas, and when the neighbor came down to check on the couple, May fled the home. He was arrested in February.

Buffalo Police Detective Valerie Stover-Kelly investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Matthew S. Szalkowski.
