DWI crash in Buffalo triggers building fire and $225,000 in damage

A car driven by an alleged drunken driver smashed into another vehicle near the corner of Deerfield and East Delavan avenues early Saturday, causing the second vehicle to crash into a building. The impact on the building’s natural gas meter triggered a fire that caused $225,000 in damage.

Buffalo Police Department spokesman Michael DeGeorge said driver Sade M. Paige, 27, was charged with driving while intoxicated. Paige was southbound on Deerfield at the time of the 4:15 a.m. crash. The second vehicle ran off the pavement and struck a building at 827 E. Delavan that once housed the Original Steak House, also known as Scotties, triggering a fire in the 2½-story, mixed-use building.

Three people in the cars were treated in Erie County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, DeGeorge said. Damage was estimated at $150,000 to the structure, $75,000 to the contents and $10,000 to the car that struck the gas meter. Firefighters were on the scene for 3½ hours.
