Wishy-washy crack dealer is placed on probation

LOCKPORT – Admitted crack cocaine dealer Bashara D. Lucas of Niagara Falls, who was quoted as telling a probation officer, “I’d rather be free in the community but I wouldn’t mind doing the time,” was placed on probation Wednesday by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr.

Lucas, 21, of 18th Street, had passed up an opportunity to enter a court-supervised drug treatment program in March, when he pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Kloch accepted the recommendation of the probation officer who did the presentencing interview, and placed Lucas on five years’ probation. Lucas, who could have been sentenced to as long as 2½ years in prison, was ordered to repay the $100 the Niagara County Drug Task Force provided an informant to buy crack from Lucas in the Falls on July 14.
