Buffalo News Football Player of the Year Tyree Brown announced via Twitter through the South Park football team account that he will attend St. Lawrence in Canton.
St. Lawrence is one of the top academic universities in the country, as USA Today in 2014 rated it as fourth in highest paid graduate in liberal arts, ranking it fourth behind Ivy League schools Cornell, Harvard and Yale.
The Saints also have one of the better Division III football programs in the country as they posted an 8-3 record, winning their first Liberty League title which secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. St.Lawrence lost in the first round of the tournament to eventual national champion Mount Union, 55-23.
Brown, a potential Division I talent who missed passing the NCAA Clearinghouse by two points, will attend St. Lawrence as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Program.
"He had a backup plan," said South Park coach Tim Delaney. "St. Lawrence did a really good job recruiting him through the EOP route. He was accepted and it's a full-ride as long as he adheres to the academic (contract), he'l go to school for free."
Brown guided South Park to the state Class A title last fall with a six touchdown performance at the Carrier Dome. Brown set school records for passing yards in a season (2,615), passing touchdowns in a season (30) and passing yards in a single game (368). He also matched South Park’s record for career passing touchdowns (47), needing just two seasons to do what co-record holder Maurice Howie did in three.
Brown matched the school record for rushing touchdowns in a season (22) and was one long touchdown run at the Carrier Dome, which was called back via penalty, from breaking the school’s single-season rushing mark. Brown rushed for 1,370 yards on 122 carries, missing the mark set by Carlos Spencer in 1996 by a mere 27 yards.
Brown’s combined passing and rushing total of 3,985 yards ranks in the top three ever in WNY.
The 5-foot-10 lightning quick, strong athlete produced highlight play after highlight play to help the Sparks become the first Buffalo Public Schools football program to win Section VI and state championships.
Along the way to making history, he made plays on offense and defense at safety during a state tournament run that included South Park ending four-time defending state champion Maine-Endwell's record 62-game winning streak.
Delaney said the St. Lawrence coaching staff has already indicated it plans to use Brown right away to return kicks and play wide receiver. The Saints may also groom him to possibly play quarterback in the future.
