St. Bonaventure University is about to start its first search for a women’s basketball coach in 16 seasons.
Jim Crowley has left the school to take the same job at Providence College. A formal news conference will be held on Wednesday in Providence.
Crowley replaces Susan Robinson Fruchtl, who left to become the athletic director at St. Francis (Pa.) University. The Friars, a member of the Big East Conference, had a 5-24 overall record last season.
Crowley had been associated with the Bonnies for 20 years, including four as an assistant coach. Bona had 20-win seasons in six of the last eight seasons. He was the Atlantic 10 coach of the year three times (2009, 2012, and 2014).
St. Bonaventure reached a postseason tournament six times during his tenure, including two trips to the NCAA tournament in 2012 and 2016. The 2012 team reached the Sweet Sixteen with wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Marist.
Last season, the Bonnies went 24-8 overall, 12-4 in the Atlantic 10. They lost to Oregon State, a Final Four participant, in the second round.
Before coming to St. Bonaventure, Crowley was the women’s head coach at Keuka College.
