Rosemary Bellissimo, retired Grey Nun, schoolteacher

July 10, 1924 – May 7, 2016

Rosemary Bellissimo, a retired Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, died Saturday in her home in Autumn View Health Care Facility, Hamburg. She was 91.

Born in Buffalo, the youngest of eight children, Miss Bellissimo attended Holy Angels School and Grover Cleveland High School. Active as a girl in Holy Angels Catholic Church, she entered the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in 1945.

She made her first vows on Aug. 24, 1948.

Known as Sister Mary Stephen, she earned a college degree at Melrose Academy in Philadelphia. After assignments in Ogdensburg and Lowell, Mass., she returned to the Buffalo area to teach at Immaculate Conception School in Eden, St. Rose of Lima School in Buffalo and Holy Angels School, where she was a teacher, an assistant teacher and a nurse’s aide.

Her last mission and residence was at D’Youville College, where she served as needed from 1973 to 1987, when she retired. She received a dispensation from her vows and returned to her family, continuing privately as she did previously, devoting herself to a ministry of prayer.

Survivors include a brother, Stephen, and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1035 Delaware Ave.
