Ernestine A. Ballard, of Buffalo, a retired Buffalo school employee, died Saturday in the hospice unit at Buffalo General Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 81.
Born in Buffalo, the former Ernestine Annette Pye attended School 32 and Girls Vocational High School, then earned a degree in business from Bryant & Stratton Business Institute.
Mrs. Ballard began working at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, then was a clerk-typist at various Buffalo public schools for more than 30 years.
A devoted member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church for 65 years, she taught Sunday school and served on numerous boards and committees. Always ready to work behind the scenes on projects, she was known for her integrity, humility and faith. One of her ministries was sending greeting cards.
She enjoyed attending church musicals and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Survivors include three daughters, Judith Degree, Cheryl Ballard Breggins and Karen McKinnie; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St.; services will follow at 11.
