SANBORN – A clerk at the Tops Supermarket on Saunders Settlement Road in Sanborn was short changed out of $50 by a con artist last week.
The clerk was not even aware that she had been deceived until a recording of the transaction was reviewed a few days later, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect used a $50 bill to purchase some chips and then confused the clerk into giving him an extra $50 in the “short change scam,” according to the report. The scammer usually starts by buying something small with a large bill and makes multiple transaction requests for change of a larger bill.
Deputies said the suspect was wearing a hat that kept his face concealed from security cameras.
