The Wraparound: Great day for Lindy Ruff; triple overtime in Nashville; Caggiula decision coming?

It was certainly a great day for Lindy Ruff.

The NHL announced the three candidates for the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year on Thursday night, and Ruff is one of the finalists. The Dallas coach is competing against Washington’s Barry Trotz and Florida’s Gerard Gallant. Ruff won the Adams as coach of the Sabres following the 2005-06 season.

"It's very well deserved," Stars General Manager Jim Nill said in the Dallas Morning News. "You look where we came from a year ago, missing the playoffs to first overall in the Western Conference and second overall in the league. We talked about how we had to be better within our division, we had to be better at home, we had to better defensively. He checked every thing off the list this season."

Ruff ended his night by watching the Stars pull even in their second-round playoff series against St. Louis. Cody Eakin scored 2:58 into overtime, giving Dallas a 3-2 victory and a 2-2 series tie.

The real overtime drama, however, was in Nashville. The Predators and San Jose went to triple overtime before finally ending things -- though the Sharks thought the night should have been over earlier.

Mike Fisher scored 11:12 into the third overtime, giving the Preds a 4-3 victory and a 2-2 series tie.

San Jose's Joe Pavelski put the puck in the net during the first overtime, but officials waved it off and cited goaltender interference despite Pavelski being knocked into Pekka Rinne.

Replay reviews have often been contentious, and this one is certainly added to the list. San Jose coach Pete DeBoer was furious.

The drama surrounding Drake Caggiula's future could end Friday. The left winger who led North Dakota to the NCAA championship may sign with an NHL team. The Sabres are a finalist.
