Report: Caggiula opting to sign with Canadian team rather than Sabres, others

The Sabres' pursuit of Drake Caggiula appears to be over.

Caggiula, a free agent who led North Dakota to the NCAA title, has chosen to sign with a team in Canada, TSN reported Friday. Buffalo was a finalist for Caggiula along with Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the New York Rangers.

Caggiula stormed onto the wish list of numerous teams after recording 25 goals and 51 points in 39 games. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound left winger was named North Dakota's Male Athlete of the Year on Thursday night.

The Sabres struggled to find scoring on the left side behind Evander Kane, and Caggiula could have competed for a spot on the top two lines.
