Letter: Our beautiful Maksym will never be forgotten

Our beautiful Maksym will never be forgotten

I am the grandfather of Maksym Sugorovskiy, the beautiful 3-year-old boy tragically killed last year on May 30 in Delaware Park.

I am grateful to all who comforted me and my family and offered their prayers during the aftermath of this terrible tragedy. As a Messianic Jewish believer, God has given me the strength to move on, albeit with much grief, to find fulfillment with different purposes the rest of my life.

Shortly after the traumatic experience, I was fraught with many “what ifs” – a measure in futility.

I am very proud of my daughter and her husband, insofar as meeting their commitments and other responsibilities amidst this extremely difficult time. My granddaughter Stephanie continues to make much progress in rehabilitation, though she still has a long road ahead.

In 1973, my mother, Mary, died on May 30 – the same day as Maksym was killed!

There are two big events planned to honor Maksym, and the community is invited. The first, a flower planting, will be held at 3 p.m. on May 28 at SolarCity on South Park Avenue. The second, a tree planting and memorial dedication, will be held at 6 p.m. May 30 in Delaware Park at the site of the accident. For information, visit Maksymsgivingtree.org.
