The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. is expected on Friday to name a construction manager for the proposed Explore & More Children’s Museum at Canalside after months of delays in the much-anticipated project.
Thomas Dee, chief executive officer of the agency, said that ECHDC officials are “in the interview process now,” and spokeswoman Laura Magee confirmed that board members are expected to identify a new construction manager to oversee the design and construction process.
The agency, a subsidiary of Empire State Development Corp., which is charged with leading the waterfront redevelopment in Buffalo, issued a request-for-proposals in February, seeking a firm to direct the construction of the “core and shell” of the museum building, which would be located next to the historically aligned replica canals. The interior would be built out separately. Groundbreaking is slated for March 2017, with completion by June 2018, followed by the museum opening.
The building would house the museum on five levels, with an outdoor terrace. The museum is currently located in East Aurora.
