McMAHON, Dr. William E. "Bill"
McMAHON - Dr. William E. "Bill" Of Springville, NY, succumbed to death at Elderwood Nursing Home in Hamburg, NY on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. He was 85 years old. He was the first baby born in the city of Albany, NY on January 1, 1931. He was the second of five children born to his parents, Matthew Aloysius McMahon and Mary Agnes (nee Marshall) McMahon. His parents, particularly his mother, instilled a strong respect for education and academic excellence. He strove for excellence in every academic endeavor from grade school, through high school at Christian Brothers Academy, Sienna College and finally, Albany Medical School. Upon completion of his formal education, and service in the U.S. Air Force, Bill McMahon grew to love the practice of medicine. Doc's family and patients were fortunate in that he never allowed himself to stop learning and continued to strive for excellence. He met the great love of his life, Marie Silvernell, in 1952; they married on February 13, 1954, a marriage that lasted 61 years, until Marie's death in February 2015. Together, they raised nine children. Bill McMahon was a devout Catholic and congregant of St. Aloysius Church in Springville, NY. He was a great advocate for St. Aloysius Regional School. Dr. McMahon is survived by his children, Jean M. McMahon, MD of Ballston Spa, Patrice A. McMahon, JD of Gloversville, Kathleen M. (Jay McCauley) McMahon of Herndon, VA, William E. McMahon, Jr. of Webster, Thomas M. McMahon (Ann Marie) McMahon of Hamburg, Ann T. (Carl, PhD) Johnston of Pittsford, Michael J. (Tracey Fleisher, PhD) McMahon of Sandy, UT, Joseph P. McMahon of Rochester and James A. McMahon of Panama. There are 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter to carry on his legacy; also surviving are his siblings, Matthew (Carole) McMahon of Wapinger Falls, Thomas (Judy) McMahon of Carlsbad, CA, Joan Kerwood of Albany; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Peter and Elizabeth McMahon; and his sister, Pat (McMahon) Kane. Friends may call Monday, May 9 from 3-7 PM at SMITH-WEISMANTEL FUNERAL HOME, 271 E. Main St., Springville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 10 at 11 AM in St. Aloysius Church, 190 Franklin St., Springville. Interment will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Springville.
