A man and a woman were extricated from their car after it collided with a tractor-trailer just after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Sterling Drive and Milestrip Road in Orchard Park.
The car was forced off the road and police, with help from the Orchard Park, Newton Abbott and Windom fire companies, cut the roof off the car to extricate the driver and her passenger.
Both were seriously injured, according to Orchard Park Police Chief Mark Pacholec. Two separate Mercy Flight helicopters were called to the scene to airlift the victims to Erie County Medical Center.
The male tractor-trailer driver also was injured and was taken to the hospital, said Pacholec.
The names of the people involved were not released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The tractor-trailer, an empty commercial car carrier, went off the road for a short time, but the driver was able to gain control and get back onto the road, Pacholec said. He said both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The westbound lane of Milestrip Road, between Route 219 and Route 20, was closed to traffic while police investigated the crash. The accident investigation unit is led by Orchard Park Police Investigator Lt. Joseph Ray. He was assisted by West Seneca Police and the State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.
