UB hoops team signs Rochester point guard Dontay Caruthers

The University at Buffalo men's basketball team has signed Dontay Caruthers, a high-scoring point guard from Rochester, coach Nate Oats announced.

Caruthers played two years ago for current UB assistant coach Bryan Hodgson at Midland College, a top two-year program in Texas. Last season he attended a junior college in Iowa but did not play due to injury. He will have three years of eligibility at UB.

The Bulls also added Williamsville South guard Graham Dolan as a walk-on. Caruthers' addition gives UB a full complement of 13 scholarship players after the departure of guard Stefan Duric, who is leaving UB. Duric, from Burlington, Ont., never hit the court for UB. He joined the Bulls in December as an incoming freshman but sat out the second semester.

The 6-foot-2 Caruthers fills a need as a true point guard to back up starter Lamonte Bearden. In his freshman season at Midland, Caruthers started 26 of 30 games. He averaged 10.1 points and 5.0 assists a game and shot 48 percent from the field.

Caruthers starred at Rochester's East High School. He was named the Greater Rochester Player of the Year and Class A first-team All-State after averaging 28.2 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per contest and 5.0 assists a game during his senior season.  During his senior year at East, Caruthers opened the year with back-to-back 50-point games, including 53 points against Edison.

"Dontay is a strong, physical, scoring combo guard that we are counting on to make significant contributions to a winning program for the next three years," said Oats. "His familiarity with Coach Hodgson is invaluable and we can't wait until he steps on campus."

Dolan averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game as a senior at Williamsville South and was named third-team All-Western New York.

"We are really excited that we were able to get a player of Graham's caliber to walk on here," said Oats. "He is one of the best shooters that I have seen and that is something that I value greatly.  He is a high-character kid that comes from a great family and we are eager to get him into our program."

Caruthers and Dolan join a recruiting class that includes James Jones, Brock Bertram and Quate McKinzie, who signed with the Bulls back in November.
