NIAGARA FALLS – The community has rallied behind the diminutive Niagara Falls boy with the giant smile who is fighting a rare form of brain cancer. Last weekend there were smiles all around as Shawn Kennedy Jr., also known as Baby Shawn, and his family met some comedic giants who appeared at in the “Comedy Get Down Show” at First Niagara Center in Buffalo
But the smiles have gone well beyond the show.
On Monday, Baby Shawn’s mother, Nicole Vathy, shared pictures on Facebook showing an MRI with signs that the radiation is working and wrote, “The next MRI is on July 25. Pray that it stays stable.”
In August he was diagnosed with a rare form of inoperable brain cancer known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma.
Niagara Falls Councilman Ezra P. Scott Jr. set up a meet and greet with the comics, who included Cedric the Entertainer, George Lopez, Eddie Griffin, Charlie Murphy and D.L. Hughley. The comics met with the family, posed for pictures and took some time to pray for Baby Shawn’s recovery last Saturday.
Baby Shawn, so named as the youngest of seven children, met the comics along with his mother and five of his brothers and sisters.
On April 4 he was given a key to the city pin by Mayor Paul A. Dyster, who said the city hopes to keep working to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
In March the community raised $5,000 so Baby Shawn could travel to Miami to meet his biggest hero, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors.
