Lefty Logan Darnell pitched a complete game shut out, pacing the Rochester Red Wings to a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Bisons Thursday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.
Darnell gave up four hits with four walks and no strike outs to move his career record to 3-1 against the Bisons.
The Red Wings accumulated runs bit by bit. First it was a 1-0 lead in the second when Stephen Wickens drilled a two-out 1-0 pitch just inside the left field pole. Then came a run in the sixth when Wilfredo Tovar led off with a single then moved to third when Bisons starter Chris Leroux threw the ball away on a pick-off move to first. Leroux got the next two outs -- a grounder to first and a strike out, but a single from Adam Brett Walker scored Tovar for a 2-0 Rochester led.
Rochester then turned a one-out Byron Buxton triple in the eighth into a run as a ground out from James Berseford wasn't hit hard enough for the Herd to turn the inning-ending double play.
For good measure there was one more run in the ninth after back-to-back singles put runners on the corners and a sacrifice to right field by former Bison Darin Mastroianni made it a 4-0 game.
No strikeouts: The only good news at the plate for the Herd -- it was the second game this season where not one Bisons' batter struck out.
Bisons vs. Rochester: The Bisons fell to 3-5 against the Red Wings this season and have lost four of the last six to their Thruway Cup rival.
Pompey out: When the Bisosn lineup first came out Thursday, Dalton Pompey was in his usual leadoff spot playing center field. But he didn't take the field. Pompey was reportedly bothered by his left heel. He missed the first part of the season with a toe injury.
Suspension hits Rochester: Red Wings outfielder/first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for the synthetic anabolic steroid Stanozolol. Rodriguez, a 2015 International League All-Star and Rochester's MVP, was hitting .234 with one home run and three runs batted in in 17 games for the Red Wings this season.
Blue Jays Weekend: The Bisons released details for their fourth annual Blue Jays Weekend May 21-22. The team will wear a new affiliation throwback jersey and cap for both games. On Saturday, May 21 will be the Marcus Stroman Bobblehead giveaway while Sunday, May 22 will be the Bisons-Blue Jays Pennant giveaway (both giveaways to the first 3,000 through Swan Street). Former Toronto players Jesse Barfield and Devon White will take part in an autograph session from noon-1:30 on Sunday. There will also be in-game giveaways both days including autographed baseballs from Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson along with tickets to see the Blue Jays at Rogers Center.
Counting the house: A chilly afternoon had only a smattering of the announced 4,393 in the Coca-Cola Field stands.
Up next: The Bisons head to Lehigh Valley for a three-game series with the IronPigs. Righty Drew Hutchison is scheduled to start for the Herd in Friday's game (7:05 p.m.) with the Scott Diamond and Wade LeBlanc rounding out the weekend rotation. The Herd returns for a seven-game homestand on Monday.
