Benjamin Rice Sr. of Buffalo, a Baptist gospel singer who sang with local choirs, died April 19 in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 83.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., where he attended public schools, he moved to Buffalo with his wife and family in 1961.
Mr. Rice worked in the maintenance and engineering department at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for about 20 years. He retired in the late 1990s.
He was a gospel singer who sang for many years with the Melodious Notes, Spiritual White Rose Gospel Singers, Tornado Gospel Singers and the Missionary Gospel Singers at churches and other venues around Buffalo.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Jessie Mae Evans; three sons, Benjamin Jr., Kerry J. and Scott; two daughters, Jepthemenia M. Land and Grace A. Rice Turner; two sisters, Ethel Rice Bryant and Carolyn Rice Horton; two brothers, Gene and Lloyd; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Lombardo Funeral Home, 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst.
