A brewery once operated on Niagara Street where grain was processed into beer.
The site, now vacant, has been considered a brownfield.
But there’s a plan to turn the lot into green space for the community.
Hence “Grain to Green,” the name of the effort on Buffalo’s West Side to beautify and provide public access to the site at 1318 Niagara St.
The location, at the foot of Lafayette Avenue, had been the site of the Meyer Malting grain elevator, which was demolished in 2006.
In 2007, the state provided $600,000 to the city to clean up the site.
A nonprofit organization called Vision Niagara is hosting a fundraiser for the project from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Resurgence Brewery, 1250 Niagara St.
Vision Niagara describes itself as an organization “dedicated to being a progressive voice for the area’s success.”
