OLEAN – Five people were arrested Tuesday in a drug raid by the Olean Police Department.
Investigators said they had received several complaints about drug trafficking in recent months in an apartment in the 100 block of Orleans Avenue, prompting them to conduct surveillance and controlled purchases of crack cocaine at the apparent. Investigators from the police department’s Street Crimes Unit obtained a search warrant, which was executed about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday by members of the police department’s Emergency Response Team.
According to police, eight people were inside the apartment at the time of the bust. Three people who did not reside there were released.
During the raid, officers seized 11 bags of crack cocaine, along with some powder cocaine, prescription pills, marijuana, cash and drug paraphernalia. Investigators estimated the value of the drugs seized at about $2,000.
Four of the five arrested were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and both seventh and third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. They are Catherine N. Ensell, 28; Joseph D. Vavrecan, 31; and Kristina Kelly, 33, all of Oleans Avenue, along with Jachai K. Turner, 19, of Buffalo. Janay D. Tarrant, 22, also of Buffalo, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree.
All of them were taken to the Olean Police station to await their arraignment in city court.
