The parent company of Univera Healthcare said current and former members have failed to claim $2.3 million in checks issued in 2012 by the health insurer and its Amherst-based subsidiary. That total includes $355,000 in checks left unclaimed by about 600 people and companies in Univera’s Western New York coverage area.
If the money isn’t claimed by the end of August, it will be handed over to New York State.
The list of people and companies with checks to claim is available at univerahealthcare.com/unclaimedfunds. The uncashed checks cover money paid for claims or refunded premiums.
To claim a check before Aug. 31, current Univera members should call the customer service phone number on their member ID card. Former members, or those calling on behalf of the estate of a family member, should call (877) 242-9464.
The two other large local insurers also are reaching out to current and former members, as required by state regulators, about unclaimed funds from 2012.
HealthNow New York of Buffalo, parent of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, said it has $378,000 in unclaimed funds. People will be listed by county at www.bcbswny.com/unclaimedfunds if they are owed $50 or more. Call 887-8418 to claim money.
And Independent Health of Amherst and its affiliate companies have $47,000 in forgotten funds. The insurer has taken out ads in newspapers and is attempting to track down members by mail using their last-known address.
