Bernice E. Young, of Buffalo, a retired school librarian, a longtime Stanley Home Products representative and an active churchwoman, died last Tuesday in Humboldt House Nursing Home. She was 96.
Born in Sparrows Point, Md., the former Bernice Thornton came to Buffalo with her family as a girl. She was a graduate of School 32 and Hutchinson Central High School.
She earned an associate’s degree in library science from Villa Maria College.
Mrs. Young worked as a librarian in School 6 and several other Buffalo schools. For more than 40 years, she also was a representative for Stanley Home Products, selling to friends, family and church groups, and won many sales awards and prizes.
Active at Bethel Tabernacle United Holy Church of America, she was recording secretary and a member of the Usher Board, the Missionary Department and the choir.
She also was active in the Republican Party and was an election inspector for 50 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles.
Surviving are a sister, Justine Holder; and a brother, William Humphrey.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bethel Tabernacle United Holy Church of America, 668 Clinton St.
