The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce will present its 50th annual Citizen of the Year Awards at a dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday in Byblos Niagara Resort and Spa, 100 Whitehaven Road. Tickets are $20 to $500. For information and tickets, call 773-3651.
The recipients include: Business, Mallwitz Island Lanes; Business Development, Corey McGowan, who brought the Gus Macker basketball tournament to Grand Island; Community Leadership, Fahim Mojawalla, co-owner of Island Ship Center and a Chamber director; Educator, high school teacher Maggie Kennedy; Environmental Steward, LDC Construction; Lifetime Service, former Chamber president Joanne Kud; and Organization, Islettes Elite Majorettes.
• Grand Island Relay For Life will host a “King of the Wing” chicken wing eating competition Friday evening in Say Cheese Pizza Company, 1771 Love Road. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., with the wing competition at 7:30 p.m. A $15 donation includes a buffet with pizza, wings and pop from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tickets are not required to attend. The musical duo Jess and Ed will perform from 9 p.m. to midnight.
• The first of three lawnmower races this year will take place Saturday afternoon in Veterans Park, 1845 Bedell Road. Registration will open at noon, testing will begin at 1 p.m. and the races will run from 2 to 5 p.m. Awards will be presented at 5:30. Members of Charles DeGlopper Post 9249, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and its Auxiliary will be selling food items and non-alcoholic beverages. Rain date will be next Sunday.
• The Grand Island Community Chorus, directed by Carolyn Lokken, will perform its spring concert, “Night and Day,” featuring songs from around the world, at 7 p.m. next Sunday in St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 2587 Baseline Road. The concert is free. Refreshments will follow.
• Erie County will provide free drive-through disposal for prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and needles from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road.
