The Erie Canal and all other canals in New York State will open to navigation at 7 a.m. Wednesday, the state Canal Corp. announced Friday.
The opening of the 192nd navigation season is four days earlier than originally scheduled.
The canal will be officially open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through May 25. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 26 through Sept. 7, and then will return to the 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule until closing day, which is set for Nov. 20.
However, locally, the Lockport locks and the lift bridges at Exchange Street in Lockport and in Gasport, Middleport and Orleans County will be open on demand until 10 p.m. daily from May 26 through Sept. 7.
