Sophomore Erica Evans scored six times, senior Taylor Giglio had three goals for Canisius in a 16-3 over Iona in New Rochelle that clinched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship for the Golden Griffins.
The Griffs will try to complete their third unbeaten conference season in the last four years when they play at Niagara on Wednesday night. Niagara (9-7, 5-2 MAAC) defeated Fairfield, 9-7, on Saturday as Taylor Wolf, Alexis Morales and Sarah Arndt scored two goals each for the Purple Eagles.
Sophomore Lauren Smolensky (three goals) and freshmen Tessa Chad (three goals) and Jourdan Roemer (two goals, four assists) joined in the Canisius attack. The Griffs never have lost to Iona in women’s lacrosse, going 12-0 all-time against the Gaels.
Canisius, which will be the No. 1 seed and host the MAAC tournament, has won eight in a row, scoring at least 12 goals in each game.
“Winning the regular season title and getting to host the tournament is a great achievement for our girls,” said coach Scott Teeter. “It’s something they’ve been working hard all season for and it’s great to see the hard work pay off.”
Evans of Peterborough, Ont., ran her goal total to 53, tying her for the fourth most in a season by a Griff with Whitney Card and Chelsea Martinez. The midfielder has now scored five or more times in seven games this year.
