Sen. Charles E. Schumer announced Tuesday that $36 million in funding for the construction phase of the new National Veterans Cemetery in Pembroke has been included in an appropriations bill.
Schumer, D-N.Y., said the money would take the project beyond the planning phase, expected to be completed this year. Construction is projected to begin in 2017.
The 132-acre site in Genesee County is on track to be the first Veterans Cemetery in the Buffalo-Rochester area. Currently, the closest cemetery for veterans is in Bath, Steuben County.
The spending bill still must be approved by the House and Senate.
