Checkers Tavern reopens, but still owes $68,000 in unpaid taxes

State tax officials gave back the keys to Checkers Tavern on Friday, two days after they seized the property for nonpayment of taxes.

The Hertel Avenue bar has reopened, but still owes more than $68,000 in unpaid sales tax and business tax, a spokesman for the state Department of Taxation and Finance told The Buffalo News on Friday.

The bar, owned by Francis Haley, has four open tax warrants – one for business taxes and three for sales taxes. The total owed as of Friday was $68,219, the department said.

Privacy provisions prevent the state from releasing further details about any taxpayer’s situation, the spokesman said.

Two of the tax warrants were issued at the end of March. A warrant for $1,966 for Haley was filed March 30, according to online public records. That same day, a warrant for $7,896 was issued for Haley as an individual and a responsible person of M.L. Haley Inc., according to the records.
