Edward J. O’Brien, retired Bethlehem Steel foreman

March 28, 1930 – April 12, 2016

Edward J. O’Brien, a retired Bethlehem Steel foreman, died Tuesday in his Orchard Park home. He was 86.

Born in Lackawanna, he was a 1948 graduate of Our Lady of Victory High School and was the first member of his family to attend college.

Mr. O’Brien graduated from Canisius College in 1952 and then worked for Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna for more than 30 years.

After the steel plant closed, he worked in the office of the engineering firm Malcolm Pirnie for several years and later delivered vehicles for National Car Rental.

Known for his sense of humor, he was a gifted conversationalist. He was a former member of the Hilltoppers Club and the Patriots Club.

His wife of 16 years, the former Patricia A. Thie, died in 1971. He married Jeanne LaValle Stalker in 1972.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, Lawrence, James, Kevin, Gerald, Gregg Stalker and Timothy Stalker; four daughters, Barbara Luchette, Karen Wittmann, Mary Patricia O’Brien and Tracie Stalker; a brother, Joseph; a sister, Dianne Anderson; 22 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:15 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Ridge Road and South Park Avenue, Lackawanna.
