'Unity and solidarity' peace rally announced for Monday ahead of Trump rally

Ahead of presidential candidate Donald J. Trump's rally at First Niagara Center in downtown Buffalo on Monday evening, plans for a "unity and solidarity peace rally" at or near Canalside were announced Wednesday.

The rally, organized by the WNY Peace Center, will include speakers and music and is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Co-sponsors include the Rev. George Nicholas of Concerned Clergy of WNY and Dr. Stan Bratton of the Network of Religious Communities, as well as the groups Young Black Democrats, Muslim Public Affair Council, Riverside-Salem UCC/DC and the Interfaith Peace Network.

Facebook groups aimed at people who want to protest against Trump have been set up over the last week following the announcement that the Republican frontrunner would hold a rally in Buffalo before Tuesday's New York primary.

The Peace Center has also organized a series of workshops on nonviolence training for direct action, the last of which will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church, 641 Masten Ave., Buffalo.
