Killswitch Engage is a band that has helped bridged the gap between two genres. The band – vocalist Jesse Leach, guitarists Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D’Antonio and drummer Justin Foley – takes the trademark harshness and edge of metalcore and combines it with the intricate riffing and catchy hooks of modern hard rock and alternative metal.
The band channeled those same elements on its second record “Alive or Just Breathing,” a 2002 release that put the band on the map. Shortly after its release, however, Leach departed and Howard Jones (Blood Has Been Shed) stepped in as vocalist. With Jones, the band was nominated for a Best Metal Performance Grammy and released “The End of Heartache” and “As Daylight Dies” which both received critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone and Allmusic.
In 2012, Jones departed and an unexpected candidate took the lead with the return of Leach. The band roared back with the 2013 album, “Disarm the Descent” which shot to No. 7 on the Billboard Top 200 and earned the band another Grammy nomination.
On the strength of its recently released seventh album, “Incarnate,” Killswitch Engage rolls into town for a show April 17 in the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.) with Memphis May Fire and 36 Crazyfists. Tickets are $29 (box office, Ticketfly.com).
