Power Take: This Cup pick is no lock, but Washington should capitalize

I’ve had some pretty good luck on predictions lately so I’m doubling down on what I said here in October: The Washington Capitals will beat the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup final.

In our NHL Preview section, I picked the Sabres to go 35-35-12. They went 35-36-11. I had them seventh in the Atlantic Division, 13th in the East and 25th overall. They finished 7th-14th-23rd. I pegged Jack Eichel for 24 goals, 29 assists and 53 points. He finished at 24-32-56. So if I’m a tad cocky over Caps-Ducks, I can’t help myself.

Still, this one is far from a lock. The Caps, remember, have never even gone to the Eastern Conference final since drafting Alex Ovechkin first overall in 2004. And they could be looking at a second-round series against Sidney Crosby and red-hot Pittsburgh. The Ducks, meanwhile, rebounded from their awful start to go 34-10-5 since Christmas. And they’re seemingly on a mission after losing at home in Game Seven of the West final to Chicago last year.

Caps-Ducks. I’m feeling it. Just don’t remind me about that call of a Nationals-Red Sox World Series I made last April.
