Bisons split twin bill in Pawtucket

The Buffalo Bisons had the opportunity to sweep their doubleheader against the host Pawtucket Red Sox Saturday afternoon, but failed to close out the second game, settling for a split at McCoy Stadium.

The Bisons won the first game, 3-1, and took a 3-2 lead in night cap only to drop a 4-3 decision. Both games were seven-inning contests.

Building a lead: The Herd went to work quickly in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Domonic Brown homered to right field then Casey Kotchman doubled to right with two outs to score Jesus Montero.

Kotchman again knocked in Montero in the third to give the Herd a 3-0 lead.

Aces on the mound: Scott Diamond picked up the win giving up one run, an RBI single to Chris Marrero in the fourth, on four hits with five strike outs in five innings of work. David Aardsma picked up the save with one strikeout in one inning.

Two-out rally: In the second game, Pawtucket jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead but the Bisons came back in the second to take the lead. With two outs, Andy Burns single scored one run and Brown followed that with a two-run single to put the Herd up, 3-2.

Travis the hero: Pawtucket tied the game in the fifth on a single from Sam Travis. The first baseman did the damage again in the bottom of the seventh to give the PawSox the win. The inning started with a single from Josh Rutledge, who then stole second. After Bisons’ pitcher Pat McCoy got a strikeout, he intentionally walked Christian Vazquez. That brought up Travis who singled to left field, scoring Rutledge from second.

Bisons bullpen: Chad Jenkins earned the spot start for the Herd in Game Two, allowing two runs on five hits in 2 ∑ innings. Chad Girodo followed for 1 ∏ innings giving all eight Bisons’ reelivers game action in 2016.

Roster move: Before the game, the Bisons placed pitcher Scott Copeland on the Temporarily Inactive List. He was scheduled to start on Sunday. Lefty Wade LeBlanc will take the mound instead.

Up next: The Bisons close out their opening series in Pawtucket at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. LeBlanc is scheduled for the Herd with righty William Cuevas scheduled for the PawSox.
