While the big headline was about World War I raging in Europe, closer to home, Father Nelson Baker and two dozen parishioners fled the chapel at Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna when a blaze broke out during a morning Mass.
The headlines read: "Our Lady of Victory Chapel in Lackawanna wrecked by blaze starting as priest is celebrating Mass"
"Damage to structure estimated at $15,000"
"Children of St. John's Protectory march from building in safety when it is feared blaze will spread."
The story goes: "Crossed electric wires are believe to have started a fire that wrecked the chapel at Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna at 9 a.m. and drove Monsignor Nelson Baker, who was celebrating Mass, and two score of his parishioners into the street. No one was injured."
