Gary W. Caldwell, of Hamburg, a retired customer service representative, died Friday in Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was 70.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1963 graduate of Hutchinson Technical High School and attended the University at Buffalo.
Mr. Caldwell joined Graphic Controls in 1970 and worked in customer service. After he retired in 2002, he worked for five years as a driver for the Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York.
A member of Sumner Lovejoy Methodist Church on Buffalo’s East Side as a boy, he was active in Hamburg United Methodist Church, where he led many committees. He was a lay leader for nearly 20 years and taught adult Sunday school for many years.
He also was a dedicated member since 1996 of the Western New York Walk to Emmaus Community and served in three positions on its board of directors.
An avid vegetable and flower gardener, he also enjoyed traveling with his family and had visited nearly every state.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, the former Rose Cimmerer; a daughter, Sarah; and two brothers, Russell and the Rev. Richard.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, in Hamburg United Methodist Church, 116 Union St., Hamburg.
