Five free events to check out with the kids

If you’re looking for some fun, free activities to do with your children, here are some options for this weekend.

It’s more than just the bare-necessities. It’s a "Jungle Book" Party from 10 to 10:45 a.m. April 9 at Monkey See, Monkey Do Children’s Bookstore (9060 Main St., Clarence). Celebrate the release of the newest "Jungle Book" movie. Kids will have a ball making safari hats and animal masks. All ages are welcome.

Gets those kids moving at the Lancaster Library (5466 Broadway, Lancaster) for a fun, energy-filled program that is all about promoting learning and physical fitness for kids ages 2 to 5. They’ll have dancing, yoga, interpretive movement and lots of fun. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to noon. April 8. Call 683-1120 to register.

Get your little one to love reading at a very young age.  The Orchard Park Library (4570 South Buffalo St., Orchard Park) is holding a toddler reading class at 10:30 a.m. April 9. The class introduces toddlers - ages 6-18 months - to reading and group activities. They’ll enjoy it all right on your lap. There will be stories, activities and music. Call 662-9851 to register.

Reading takes on a new meaning from 10:30 a.m. to noon April 9 in the Kenmore Library (160 Delaware Road, Kenmore). Your child can read to a dog! Yep, it is a 15-minute session to read to licensed therapy dog, Rufus. This event is recommended for ages 5 to 12 and registration is required at 873-2842. If getting your kid to read is a bit "ruff," check out this event for sure.

Capture the moment and more during a photography class at 1 p.m. April 9 at Reinstein Woods (77 Honore Drive, Cheektowaga). This is a neat event for ages 12 and older as well as adults.  Bring your camera and head out on a trail to practice taking pictures. Share photos, ask questions and get some tips for taking great nature photos. Registration for this picture-perfect event is required at 683-5959.
