Gerald Buchheit, the Orchard Park businessman who wants to demolish the Freezer Queen building at 975 and 1005 Fuhrman Blvd. and replace it with a 23-story apartment tower on the Outer Harbor, has applied for approval to participate in the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Brownfield Cleanup Program.
Participation in the program allows a developer or property owner to complete an environmental cleanup of a site under state supervision and authority, clearing them from later liability if the remediation is done in accordance with state requirements. The program also includes tax credits to help cover the costs of both the cleanup and redevelopment, which has been a key component of several area construction projects.
Buccheit’s project would cost $60 million.
Comments regarding the application are due by May 6.
