A planning project led by the University at Buffalo Regional Institute received an award at the American Planning Association’s national conference Monday in Phoenix, Ariz., for its public outreach efforts.
The One Region Forward plan for sustainable development of the Buffalo Niagara region was one of six Achievement Award winners under the APA’s annual national planning awards program. Nine other projects across the nation received Excellence Awards.
One Region Forward “tested, adapted and invented all sorts of engagement techniques designed to involve people who typically don’t show up to community meetings,” said project director Bart Roberts.
The project attracted people to UB’s Citizen Planning School, started a text message survey campaign, set up games and interactive exhibits at ethnic and neighborhood festivals, and hosted online forums to provide information on community issues.
