President has done well despite GOP roadblocks
A recent letter writer said that if Donald Trump wins, “he might not be the best president, but he couldn’t possibly be worse than the current president.” Well, Trump, himself, in 2009, said President Obama has “handled the tremendous mess he walked into very well. … He has kept his eye on both national and international issues … which is certainly a change from the last administration.”
Indeed, when Obama entered the White House, he had to deal with a broken economy, two wars and Republican leaders determined to make him fail. As Mitch McConnell, Senate minority leader, put it, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
Despite the Republicans’ roadblocks for seven years, Obama managed the Great Recession by cutting taxes and promoting public works to stimulate the economy; helped to save GM and Chrysler, maintaining 3 million jobs; regulated big banks to deal with their financial crisis; and passed the Affordable Care Act, enabling millions of people to have health care.
As for foreign affairs, Obama helped to end the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, brokered a nuclear peace agreement with Iran, promoted a coalition of countries to crush ISIS terrorists and negotiated with Cuba’s President Raul Castro to “bury” the Cold War while urging Congress to lift the embargo trade against the Cubans.
